Positioning systems have played a major role in people’s lives since the GPS satellite technology became publicly available in the late 90’s. Today almost everyone has a device with positioning capabilities like a smartphone, tablet, GPS tracking device or a watch with built-in GPS.Now the positioning technology goes indoor and new possibilities emerge for indoor use.

EddyStone

Then this become a buzz word since 2013 when apple first introduced the iBeacon technology followed by google EddyStone.which is a shrunken hardware and low energy bluetooth device which emit signal bla bla bla ….. its over so what’s next ?

The WiFi Indoor Positioning is based on IEEE 802.11mc WiFi protocol

Much like GPS ,the 802.11mc Wi-Fi standard will be able to do something similar indoors. This feature is generally referred to as RTT — (fine-time-measurement of RTT of signals in WiFi bands), or “Round Trip Time.”

EEEEE…. Now some little engineering stuff so how it works??

To determine a device’s distance from wireless access points, henceforth referred to as APs. Given the location and distances from three different APs, we can use multilateration to determine a device’s location within a couple of meters.So here comes the formula

d = v t

if we measure the amount of time it takes for data to get from an AP to our device and then multiply that by the speed, we will get the distance to that AP.

where we use this?

It is one of the major new features announced by Google for the upcoming Android P.

if google then y not appleReveals a Powerful Location-Based Service for the iPhone

In a world where everyone is concerned about privacy, the thought of your phone not only tracking your outdoor movements, but also where you go indoors can be a bit rattling. Fortunately, there’s some really awesome practical application here.

Proximity marketing

Engage with your customers on the go indoors and outdoors with offers, loyalty programs, and giveaways don’t miss a chance to invite them in.

IOT to Smart IOT-if you have multiple smart devices in your house — smart lights, for example — you could ask a digital assistant to “turn on the lights” and it would be able to pinpoint which room you’re in instead of — “turn on the lights in master-bedroom”.

Smart Navigation which uses public 802.11 mc devices

Smart retail with smart digital assistant

Instead of personal assistance in mall, retails smart assistant like Alexa, siri, echo are deployed for great market analytics .
